These traits do not apply to the earliest earwigs, however, since basal, extinct members of the order - traditionally classified in the paraphyletic suborder Archidermaptera - all exhibited five-segmented tarsi, well-developed ovipositors, veined tegmina, and segmented cerci (Willmann, 1990, Haas and Klass, 2003, Grimaldi and Engel, 2005).

Some earwig fossils belong to the extinct suborders Archidermaptera or Eodermaptera, the former of which dates from the Late Triassic and the latter from the Middle Jurassic.
